Landscape Design in Eagle Mountain

One plan, built for your side of town

Eagle Mountain has two climates inside one city line. The Ranches, on the Utah Lake side of the Lake Mountains, runs milder, closer to what Salt Lake City sees. City Center, out toward Fairfield, is cooler and drier and much colder at night. The Fairfield weather station logs a 95-day growing season with a last spring freeze around June 7. The station closer to the Ranches side shows about 138 days. A design that ignores that line loses plants.

A whole-yard plan also has to fit the water. Eagle Mountain has no citywide secondary system, and most of the city's water demand goes to outdoor watering. For new development the city has water-wise rules: it limits how much lawn new yards can have, asks for drought-tolerant trees and shrubs and wants planting beds on drip. Those rules have been changing, so we confirm the current version with the city before we design.

So we start with one plan for everything: patio, walls, lawn, beds, lights, sprinklers and maybe a court. You see where the wind will hit, where the shade will land and which parts to build first if you are working toward the city's deadline. Jackson walks the lot with you, then we draw it and price it in writing. The same crew builds it, so nothing gets lost between companies.

Eagle Mountain is two climates in one city, the milder Ranches by the Lake Mountains and the colder City Center out toward Fairfield, with open Cedar Valley wind, metered city water and a one-year clock on new front yards.

Know your Eagle Mountain ground

Elevation
About 4,885 feet
Ground
Alkaline, well-drained native ground that builders often leave stripped and packed hard, running saltier toward City Center
Secondary irrigation
there is no citywide secondary system, so yards run on metered city water, and lawns may not be watered from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Growing season
USDA zone 6a to 7a, with cold pockets that act colder, last frost around May 15 on the Ranches side and as late as June 7 near City Center
Wall permits
In Eagle Mountain a retaining wall over 4 feet tall, counting the 30-inch footing depth, needs a building permit and engineered drawings, and no wall may rise more than 6 feet above finished grade

The Eagle Mountain challenges

Where Eagle Mountain designs go wrong

One plant list for two climates

A shrub that does fine in the Ranches can freeze out near City Center. USU says some sites in town act like zone 4b to 5b because cold air pools there, even though the map says 6a to 7a. We pick plants for your exact side of town and hold tender ones until frost risk is past.

Too much lawn on metered water

A 2022 USU review found Eagle Mountain residents using about twice as much lawn water as they needed. Big lawns are part of that. We put lawn where you will actually use it, often for kids and dogs, and use rock, drip beds and patio for the rest.

No plan for the wind

A design that looks great on paper can struggle on a lot with nothing between it and the West Desert. Light bark blows away, tall grasses flatten and young trees lean. We place windbreaks, choose sturdy plants and stake trees for their first few years.

Building in the wrong order

Putting in sod before the patio or the sprinkler mains means tearing it up later. With a one-year front yard and two-year back yard deadline for new homes, the order matters. We phase the plan so the work done first never gets dug up again.

The J&H approach

How we design a whole Eagle Mountain yard

1 How we handle it

Walk the lot together

Jackson walks the yard with you and notes the slope, the soil, where the wind hits and where the sun sits late in the day. We also ask how you live: kids, dogs, hosting, gardening. All of that goes into the first sketch.

2 How we handle it

Draw it to the city's rules

We lay out lawn, beds, patios and walls inside the city's water-wise rules and your HOA's guidelines, then zone the sprinklers and drip on the same drawing. You see the full picture and the full price before anything is built.

3 How we handle it

Build it in phases if you want

Not everyone builds a whole yard in one season. We can split the plan into phases, front yard first to meet the deadline and the back later, with sprinkler mains and sleeves set so phase two plugs right in.

Eagle Mountain questions

Landscape Design in Eagle Mountain: what people ask

Do I need a design if I just want a simple yard?
Even a simple yard goes better with a plan here. The city's water-wise rules, your HOA and the one-year front and two-year back yard deadlines for new homes all shape the layout. A plan keeps you from building something twice. We do the design and the build together.
What plants grow well in Eagle Mountain?
Plants that handle alkaline soil, cold nights and wind do best. This ground was sagebrush and bunchgrass before it was houses, and that tells you a lot. USU has a plant list written just for Eagle Mountain. We use it, then adjust for the Ranches or City Center, where the soil also runs saltier.
How much lawn can I have in Eagle Mountain?
For new development the city limits how much lawn a yard can have, and the exact wording leaves some gray area. Rules for rear yards and artificial turf have also been under review. We confirm the current rules with the city before we draw your plan, so you never install lawn you have to pull out.

Your dream yard. Done right. Done on time.
