Backyard Remodel in Elk Ridge

Remodeling a backyard on the hill

Elk Ridge backyards come with something most valley lots do not have: a view. Up on the shoulder of Loafer Mountain, plenty of homes look out across the valley. The catch is that the yard usually slopes away from the house, and many were left as a bare hill, a strip of lawn and not much else. A remodel turns that hill into levels you can actually use.

On an Elk Ridge remodel, the walls and grading are the bones. We plan terraces for a patio, a fire area, maybe a lawn or a pool, and the walls that hold them up. Walls over 4 feet need a permit and usually an engineer. Then come the parts you see: fire, shade, an outdoor kitchen, planting and lighting that can handle the snow, the deer and the cold.

We do the whole job with our own crew, from the first wall to the last light. On a hillside that matters, because the walls, the patio base and the drainage all have to be planned as one. Jackson walks the lot with you, shows you what fits your budget, and puts the price in writing. Many homeowners build the top terrace first and add the lower levels later.

Elk Ridge is the high, steep one, up around 5,361 feet on Loafer Mountain, where almost every lot is a hillside lot the city code steps down the slope, and the deer, wind and snow are all real.

Ground

The Elk Ridge challenges

What makes an Elk Ridge remodel different

Turning a slope into rooms

Every level needs a wall, drainage and a way to get to it. Steps, paths and walls take a bigger share of the budget on a steep lot than most people expect. Knowing that before the design is drawn keeps the plan honest.

Snow and a short build window

Frost can linger into mid-May and snow can show up early in the fall. Concrete pours, surface coatings and planting all have a tighter window up here, so a remodel has to be scheduled with the mountain in mind. We build the calendar first.

Deer finding the new plants

Fresh planting is the first thing the deer find. A remodel built around the wrong plant list can be stripped down in its first winter, which is a hard thing to watch after spending real money on the yard. The plant list is part of the budget, not an afterthought.

Pools on sloped ground

A pool on a hillside needs a level pad, strong walls and careful drainage on the downhill side. It can absolutely be done, but it changes both the cost and the plan, and it is worth knowing that before you fall for a design.

The J&H approach

How we remodel Elk Ridge backyards

1 How we handle it

Walls and drainage first

We build the terraces, walls and drainage before any finish work. That keeps the patios level for the long haul and keeps snowmelt moving away from the house and the new features. The pretty parts go on a base that will not move.

2 How we handle it

Layout aimed at the view

We put seating, fire and shade where you can see the valley, then tuck them out of the main wind path. A good view is only worth it if you can sit there comfortably on a cool evening.

3 How we handle it

Planting the deer pass by

We use hardy, deer-resistant plants on the open slopes and keep your favorites near the house or behind fencing. Young trees get guards for their first few winters while they get established. The yard still looks full in March.

Elk Ridge questions

Backyard Remodel in Elk Ridge: what people ask

Can I have a pool in my Elk Ridge backyard?
Often, yes. On a slope it needs a level pad, retaining walls and careful drainage, and the walls may need engineering. We look at your lot and give you an honest read on what it takes before you spend money on pool drawings.
Do I have to remodel the whole yard at once?
No. On hillside lots we often build the terrace nearest the house first, then add the lower levels later. We plan it so phase two does not undo phase one, and each phase comes with its own written price.
How do you keep a new yard from being eaten by deer?
We pick plants deer tend to avoid, protect young trees with guards, and put the plants they love closer to the house or behind fencing. It will not stop every nibble, but it keeps the yard looking finished through the winter.

Your dream yard. Done right. Done on time.
