Landscape Design in Orem

An Orem yard plan starts with the water bill

In most Utah County towns, the cost of watering a lawn is a footnote. In Orem it is part of the design. Orem runs no secondary irrigation, so every sprinkler zone uses treated culinary water on a tiered rate. A yard that is three-quarters lawn on a few big zones lands in the top tier every July. A planned yard can look fuller and cost less to water at the same time.

That shapes the plan before anything else. Lawn goes where you actually use it, for the kids, the dog or a game of catch. Beds get grouped by how much water they need and run on drip. Patios, paths and a fire area take up space that used to be grass. The plants get picked for heavy, alkaline Lake Bonneville clay and a late-April last frost, not pulled from a catalog shot somewhere with real rain.

Then the same crew builds it. Jackson and the team walk your lot, draw one plan for the whole yard, price it in writing and build it ourselves. And if you have a view of Mount Timpanogos from the back patio, we plan the trees so you can still see the mountain in ten years instead of staring at a hedge you planted.

Orem is the one town around here with no secondary water, so the sprinkler design shows up on your culinary bill in a way it does not for the neighbors.

The Orem challenges

What an Orem design has to get right

Every zone runs on culinary water

With no secondary system, a badly zoned yard costs real money every month of the season. Lawn and shrubs on the same valve means one of them is always overwatered. A plan groups plants by water need, so each zone runs only as long as it should.

Heavy alkaline clay

Orem's soil runs alkaline, roughly pH 7.5 to 8.5, and drains slowly. Plants that want acid soil turn yellow from iron shortage, and clay that gets tilled seals right back up. We plan soil prep and the plant list for this exact ground.

Older yards with big trees

Many Orem lots have mature shade trees and layouts from when the house was new. A new design has to work with root zones, shade patterns and any existing hardscape that is still worth keeping, instead of pretending the yard is blank.

Canyon wind and lake sun

East Orem, near Provo Canyon, gets evening gusts. West-side lots toward Lakeview and Geneva get long afternoon sun off the lake. Where the patio sits and where the shade goes depend on which side of town your house is on.

The J&H approach

How we design and build Orem yards

1 How we handle it

Start with how you live

Jackson walks the yard and asks how you use it. Where the kids play, where you eat outside, what you are tired of mowing and fixing. That shapes how much lawn stays and where the patio, beds and paths go.

2 How we handle it

One plan, water first

We lay out hardscape, grading, planting, lighting and irrigation together. Irrigation is zoned by water need, with drip for beds and a smart controller, so the yard is built to use less culinary water from the first summer.

3 How we handle it

The same crew builds it

Our team builds what we design. If something changes in the dirt, like a buried line or an old footing, we adjust and tell you before moving on. You can also build in phases without redoing anything later.

Orem questions

Landscape Design in Orem: what people ask

Can a design really lower my Orem water bill?
Yes. Shrinking lawn to the areas you use, grouping plants by water need, and putting beds on drip all cut culinary water use. On a tiered rate, trimming the heavy summer months helps the most. The yard can still look full and green when it is done.
Do I have to rip out all my lawn?
No. Lawn is great where you use it. We usually keep a good play or gathering area and replace the strips and corners that are hard to water evenly, like narrow side yards and park strips that mostly water the sidewalk.
What plants do well in Orem?
Plants that handle alkaline clay and dry summers, including Utah natives like Gambel oak, Utah serviceberry and penstemon. We avoid acid-loving plants that yellow out here. Tender plants wait until after the late-April frost, and the rest can go in earlier.
Can you design around my view of Timpanogos?
Yes. We place trees and taller plants so they frame the view instead of blocking it as they grow. Patio and pergola placement gets set so you face the mountain when you sit down, not the back of the garage.
