Fencing, Decks and Pergolas in Springville

Setting posts in Springville ground, from clay to cobble

Every fence, deck and pergola starts with holes in the ground, and Springville ground comes in two very different kinds. On the west fields and along Hobble Creek it is heavy lakebed clay that grabs a post and pushes it with frost. On the east bench the auger hits cobble and boulders a foot down, and a crew without the right tools ends up with shallow holes and short posts.

Springville also asks for paperwork. Fence and wall plans have to be submitted to and approved by Community Development, with a site plan showing location, height and materials, before anything goes up. A deck or a pergola with a roof may also need a building permit. Bench lots in the Hillside Overlay have their own fence rules, including taller wrought-iron styles on some large lots.

We handle both sides of that. We bring the right equipment to drill through cobble, set posts below the frost depth, and build deck and pergola footings that do not move. We draw the site plan, submit it, and keep the approval with your job. On the bench, we also plan for deer, the air coming off Hobble Creek Canyon, and the view you bought the lot for.

Springville, Art City, spreads from about 4,400 feet by Utah Lake up past 5,600 feet on the east bench, so a west-side clay yard and a bench view-lot are different soil, drainage and frost worlds, and one quote does not fit both.

Know your Springville ground

Elevation
About 4,551 feet
Ground
Heavy Lake Bonneville lakebed clay on the valley floor, gravelly cobble-filled fan soil up on the east bench, and Hobble Creek bottoms with a high water table
Secondary irrigation
Springville runs its own city pressurized irrigation, on around April 15 and off around October 15, and the high line pressure means most systems need a filter and a pressure reducer
Growing season
USDA zone 6b to 7a, last frost early-to-mid May on the bench
Wall permits
In Springville a retaining wall over 4 feet, footing included, needs a permit and engineering, and east-bench lots can fall in the Hillside Overlay with added grading rules
Where we work
the Hobble Creek corridor, Spring Creek, the east bench and Canyon Road, East Hobble Creek, the west fields near Utah Lake, the Art City downtown

The Springville challenges

Fence, deck and shade trouble in Springville

Augers that hit cobble

East-bench lots, from Little Rock Canyon down to East Hobble Creek, sit on fan soil packed with river rock. A regular auger stalls on it. Crews in a hurry set posts at whatever depth they reached. Those posts lean or lift within a few winters.

Clay that jacks posts up

West-side clay swells when wet and grips a post as it freezes. Over several winters it can lift a post an inch or more, and the fence line goes wavy. Gates bind and stop latching first, which is usually when the call comes in.

Fence plans that need approval

Springville requires fence plans to be approved before construction, with a site plan and a review fee. A fence built without approval can draw a stop order or a tear-out. Height rules also change by zone, and bench lots in the Hillside Overlay play by somewhat different rules.

Deer and views on the bench

Up on the bench, deer come down off the Wasatch in winter and browse anything soft. A tall solid deer fence that blocks the valley view is not what most people want. Getting both, the view and the protection, takes careful style and placement.

The J&H approach

How we build fences, decks and pergolas in Springville

1 How we handle it

Right tools for the dig

On bench lots we bring rock augers and a mini excavator so every post reaches full depth, cobble or not. On clay lots we flare the bottom of the hole and use enough concrete to resist frost lift. Deck footings get the same care.

2 How we handle it

Paperwork done first

We draw the site plan with location, height and materials, submit it to Springville Community Development, and wait for approval before we order material. For decks and roofed pergolas, we confirm current permit requirements with the city too.

3 How we handle it

Built for bench life

Bench pergolas get poured footings and heavy steel brackets, sized for the canyon air. For deer, we use open styles like wrought iron or wire panels where they are allowed, so you keep the protection and the view.

Springville questions

Fencing, Decks and Pergolas in Springville: what people ask

Do I need approval for a fence in Springville?
Yes. Springville wants fence plans submitted to and approved by Community Development before you build, with a site plan showing where it goes, how tall it is and what it is made of. There is a review fee. We prepare and submit it for you.
Can you put a fence in on my rocky bench lot?
Yes. Cobble is normal on the east bench. We use rock augers and a mini excavator when we need to, so posts reach full depth. The rock we pull out can go into a dry creek bed or a boulder border instead of a trip to the dump.
What fence keeps deer out without blocking the view?
Open styles like wrought iron or welded wire panels on steel posts can stop deer and still let you see the valley. Height and style rules vary by zone, so we confirm what your lot allows with the city before we design it.
Will a deck on the bench hold up to winter?
It will if the footings are deep and the boards are right. The bench runs colder than the valley floor and frosts later in spring. We set footings below frost depth, use composite or well-sealed wood, and leave airflow under the deck so it dries out between storms.

Your dream yard. Done right. Done on time.
