Landscape Design in American Fork

One plan for the whole American Fork yard

A lot of American Fork yards were built a piece at a time. A patio here, a few shrubs there, a lawn that got bigger every year. The trouble shows up when you add the next piece and have to cut through sprinkler lines or pull up last year's work. A whole-yard plan fixes that. You decide what goes where once, then build it in the order that makes sense.

The plan has to fit how water works here. American Fork runs its own pressurized irrigation from April 15 to October 15, and the city has put meters on the connections and is phasing in a tiered rate based on lot size and use. That makes a big thirsty lawn cost more as the years go by. We put lawn where kids and dogs actually play and use drip and tougher plants in the rest.

Then the ground. A yard on the lakebed silt of the flat west side needs different base work and drainage than a lot on the higher ground toward the canyon, where the soil turns rocky. We walk the lot, dig where we need to, and draw the yard for the dirt you have. Jackson goes over the design with you before anything gets priced line by line.

American Fork sits at the foot of Timpanogos where the river comes out of the canyon, so one town runs from soft lakebed silt that ponds and settles on the flats to boulder ground at the canyon mouth, all watered on the city's metered PI schedule.

Know your American Fork ground

Elevation
About 4,613 feet
Ground
Lake Bonneville silt and clay on the flat plain that settles and ponds, river gravel under it at depths that vary, and boulder-rich fan ground at the mountain front
Secondary irrigation
American Fork runs its own metered pressurized irrigation from April 15 to October 15, with even and odd watering days that the city adjusts in dry years
Growing season
USDA zone 6a to 7a, depending on the lot, last frost around late April
Wall permits
In American Fork any fence or wall over 48 inches needs a plan and a permit from the Building Division (City Code 17.5.115), and lots on the city's hazard map can need a soils report

The American Fork challenges

Design problems we solve in American Fork

Built in pieces, torn up later

When the patio, lawn and sprinklers are each done by a different crew, nothing lines up. Pipe ends up right under the spot where you want the fire pit. We plan sleeves, power and drainage for every phase, even the ones you build later.

A lawn that costs more each year

With metered water and tiered rates on the way, the biggest lawn on the street can turn into the biggest water bill. We size the lawn for how you use it and put the rest into beds, rock and drip zones.

Ground that changes across town

Lakebed silt on the flats holds water and settles. Fan gravel and boulders near the canyon drain fast. A plant list or base depth copied from one side of town can fail on the other, so we design for your lot.

Rebates that need timing

American Fork is on the Utah Water Savers list for lawn replacement rebates, but work cannot start before the program's pre-inspection. Rip the lawn out first and you can lose the rebate. We set the build schedule around that inspection date.

The J&H approach

How we design yards in American Fork

1 How we handle it

Walk, measure, test

Jackson walks the yard with you. We measure, check sun and shade, and dig a test hole or two. You tell us how you live outside, and that gives us real facts to draw from.

2 How we handle it

Draw it, price it, phase it

We draw the whole yard, then price it in clear pieces. If you want to build over two seasons, we set the order so phase two never tears up phase one. You see the cost of each phase before you commit to any of it.

3 How we handle it

Build from the ground up

Grading and drainage go first, then sprinkler mains and sleeves, then hardscape, then lawn and plants. That order keeps finished work from getting dug back up, and it means the crew is never driving a loader across new sod.

American Fork questions

Landscape Design in American Fork: what people ask

Do I have to build the whole design at once?
No. Many American Fork families build in two or three phases. The plan shows where every piece goes, and we lay sleeves and pipe early so later phases connect without digging up the patio or lawn you already paid for.
Can the design help with my water bill?
Yes. The city meters pressurized irrigation and is phasing in tiered rates based on lot size and use. We put lawn where you play, use drip in beds and group plants by how much water they need, so the system runs fewer minutes on your watering days.
Is there a rebate for replacing lawn in American Fork?
American Fork is on the eligible list for Utah Water Savers lawn replacement rebates. The program requires a pre-inspection before any work starts. We go over the current program terms with you and build the schedule so you do not lose it.
