Landscaping in American Fork

Two kinds of ground in one town

American Fork sits at the foot of Mount Timpanogos, about 4,613 feet up, with the American Fork River running through town on its way to Utah Lake. Most of the city is built on the flat floor of old Lake Bonneville. The USGS describes that ground as silt and clay that settles under heavy loads and holds standing water after a hard rain.

Near the canyon mouth the ground changes. River and creek gravel, cobbles and boulders sit along the mountain front, and in parts of town that gravel lies under the silt at depths that vary from block to block. The city's hazard map under City Code 17.22 also marks liquefaction, steep slope and wetland areas, which can mean a soils report for a bigger project.

Outdoor water comes off the city's own pressurized irrigation, metered, from April 15 to October 15. We build for the ground and the water on your lot, and we take care of the permits that come with tall fences and walls.

American Fork sits at an elevation of about 4,613 feet at the foot of Mount Timpanogos, with the American Fork River running through town; it runs its own metered pressurized irrigation from April 15 to October 15, and any fence or wall over 48 inches needs a plan and a permit under City Code 17.5.115.

What American Fork yards deal with

The local problems, and how we handle them

Patios that sink on silt

Lakebed silt and clay settle under weight and go soft when wet. Patios, courts and walls on a thin base drop and crack. We test dig and build a deeper, compacted base on the flats.

Metered water, set days

Pressurized irrigation is metered, a tiered rate is being phased in, and addresses water on even or odd days. We zone systems for your days, add the filter the city recommends and set cycle and soak on slow soil.

Permits over 48 inches

Any fence or wall over 48 inches needs a plan and a permit from the Building Division. Lots on the hazard map can need a soils report. We sort all of that out before we dig.

Fence and wall rules come from American Fork City Code Sec. 17.5.115, and mapped hazard areas from Code 17.22. We confirm retaining wall rules and other current requirements with the Building Division and your HOA on every job.

Planting that lasts here

Planting for zone 6a to 7a

American Fork runs USDA zone 6a to 7a depending on the lot. The last spring frost usually comes around late April, so we hold tender plants until the frost risk has passed. Utah soil runs alkaline, and we pick tough plants that handle it instead of ones that yellow out by August.

With meters and tiered rates coming, lawn belongs where you use it. American Fork is on the Utah Water Savers list for lawn replacement rebates, and no work can start before the pre-inspection. We plan swaps around that and fill the rest with drip-fed beds, rock and shade trees.

Neighborhoods we work

All over American Fork

We work across American Fork: the historic downtown, the east side near the canyon mouth, the Mount Timpanogos Temple area and Autumn Crest, Mitchell Farms, Dixie Farms, Willow Glen, Fenn Farms, the Edgewater and FrontRunner area, and the west side toward Lehi.

Big old shade trees downtown or a fresh lot by the station, the first step is the same. Jackson walks the yard and gives you a clear price in writing.

American Fork questions

What American Fork homeowners ask us

Do I need a permit for a fence or wall in American Fork?
Yes, if it is taller than 48 inches. City code requires a plan sent to the Building Division and a permit before it is built. Retaining walls can come with more rules, so we confirm them with the Building Division for each job.
When does pressurized irrigation run in American Fork?
From about April 15 to October 15. On the current schedule, even addresses water Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday, odd addresses water Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and Saturday is spot watering only. The city changes the schedule in dry years.
Why do American Fork patios settle?
Much of town sits on lakebed silt and clay that the USGS says settles under heavy loads and gets weak when wet. A thin base over it gives out. We dig, compact a deeper base and slope everything away from the house.
Are there rebates for replacing lawn in American Fork?
American Fork is on the Utah Water Savers eligible list for lawn replacement. Work cannot start before the pre-inspection, so do not tear anything out early. We check the current program terms with you and plan the job around them.
