Fencing, Decks and Pergolas in American Fork

Fences, decks and shade that stay put

American Fork has a simple fence rule worth knowing before you buy materials. Under City Code 17.5.115, any fence or wall taller than 48 inches needs a plan sent to the Building Division and a permit before it goes up. Most privacy fences are taller than that. The code also limits height on some parts of a lot, so where the fence runs matters as much as how tall it is.

The ground is the next question. On the flats, posts sit in lakebed silt that turns soft when it is wet, so a shallow post can lean after a wet spring. Near the canyon mouth, the auger can hit cobbles and boulders, and one post hole can eat half a morning. We dig a test hole before we quote, so the price matches the dig you really have.

Wind is real here too. In March 2012 a storm sent gusts up to 60 mph along the Wasatch Front, and American Fork homes lost roof shingles. A pergola or a solid fence acts like a sail in that kind of wind. We size the posts, footings and hardware for it, and we build shade with gaps that let air move through.

American Fork sits at the foot of Timpanogos where the river comes out of the canyon, so one town runs from soft lakebed silt that ponds and settles on the flats to boulder ground at the canyon mouth, all watered on the city's metered PI schedule.

Elevation
About 4,613 feet
Ground
Lake Bonneville silt and clay on the flat plain that settles and ponds, river gravel under it at depths that vary, and boulder-rich fan ground at the mountain front
Secondary irrigation
American Fork runs its own metered pressurized irrigation from April 15 to October 15, with even and odd watering days that the city adjusts in dry years
Growing season
USDA zone 6a to 7a, depending on the lot, last frost around late April
Wall permits
In American Fork any fence or wall over 48 inches needs a plan and a permit from the Building Division (City Code 17.5.115), and lots on the city's hazard map can need a soils report

The American Fork challenges

Fence, deck and pergola trouble in American Fork

Permits for anything over 48 inches

Privacy fences, tall walls and some screens cross the 48-inch line. American Fork wants a plan and a permit before they go up. Skipping it can mean a stop order or a fence you have to cut down. We send the plan in and wait for the permit.

Posts in soft silt

Wet lakebed silt does not grip a post well. Set one shallow in that soil and it leans after the first wet winter. We dig deeper and set posts in concrete with gravel at the bottom so water drains away from the wood or steel.

Pergolas that catch wind

A solid-roof pergola can lift in a big windstorm. We use footings sized for the structure, metal brackets at the posts and open slats or louvers where they fit, so wind passes through instead of shoving the whole thing toward the neighbor's yard.

HOA rules on newer streets

Newer attached homes near I-15 and the FrontRunner station usually have an HOA with rules on fence style and color. Many older streets near downtown have no HOA at all. If you have one, we read the rules with you before we order any material.

The J&H approach

How we build fences, decks and pergolas here

1 How we handle it

Plan, permit, then build

We measure, draw the fence or deck, and send it to the Building Division when the height or size calls for it. Material gets ordered after the plan is set, so nothing sits in your driveway for weeks.

2 How we handle it

Footings matched to your soil

On the silt we dig deeper footings. Near the canyon we break through rock or shift a post a few inches to miss a boulder. Every post gets checked for plumb before the concrete sets up.

3 How we handle it

Built for sun and wind

Decks and pergolas face hard summer sun and the odd big windstorm. We pick boards and finishes that handle UV, use coated or stainless fasteners and tie every post to its footing with a metal bracket.

American Fork questions

Fencing, Decks and Pergolas in American Fork: what people ask

How tall can my fence be in American Fork?
City code allows lower fences across most of a lot and taller fences, up to 6 feet, in certain areas. Go over 48 inches and you need a plan and a permit from the Building Division. We check where your fence can run and how tall it can be before you pick a style.
Do I need a permit for a deck?
Many decks do, mostly raised decks or ones tied to the house. American Fork's Building Division sets those rules, and they can change. We confirm what your deck needs with the city and your HOA, then pull the permit before we start framing.
Will a pergola hold up in a big wind?
It will if it is built for it. The 2012 windstorm sent 60 mph gusts down the Wasatch Front and tore shingles off American Fork roofs. We set pergola posts in real footings, bolt them with metal brackets and leave gaps up top so wind can pass through.
