Backyard Remodel in Orem

Remodeling an established Orem backyard

A lot of Orem backyards have good bones and tired details. Big shade trees, a decent lot size, a level yard on the old Provo Bench. But the patio is a small slab by the back door, the lawn covers everything else, and the sprinklers have not been touched in years. A remodel keeps what works and builds the outdoor living space the house never had when it went up.

Orem shapes a remodel in its own ways. Every zone runs on culinary water, so trading some lawn for patio, fire and shade pays you back every summer. The soil is heavy, alkaline clay that heaves, so new hardscape and pool decking need a real base under them. And with a last frost in late April, planting here can start a little ahead of the higher, colder parts of the valley.

Jackson walks the yard with you, then the team draws one plan for the patios, pool area, fire features, pergola, planting and lighting, and the same crew builds it. You see the whole yard on paper, with a written price broken out piece by piece, before anything gets torn up. No guessing what the back corner will look like when we are done.

Orem is the one town around here with no secondary water, so the sprinkler design shows up on your culinary bill in a way it does not for the neighbors.

The Orem challenges

What an Orem remodel has to handle

Too much lawn on culinary water

Big lawns in older Orem yards are expensive to keep green. A remodel that does not rethink the lawn leaves the biggest ongoing cost exactly where it was. We size the lawn to the spots you actually use and give the rest a better job.

Heaving clay under new hardscape

Large patios, pool decks and kitchens on Orem clay need deep compacted base and good drainage around them. Skip that, and the new yard starts cracking and tilting within a few winters of going in. The fix then costs more than doing the base right would have.

Working around mature trees

Old shade trees are a big part of what makes an Orem lot pleasant in August. Digging footings and bases near them takes care, so the roots, and the shade they throw on your new patio, survive the remodel. We keep heavy equipment off the root zone too.

Getting into a finished yard

Older Orem lots often have narrow side yards, fences on the property line and an established front yard. Getting equipment and materials to the back takes planning so the front lawn does not pay the price. We map access before we quote, so there are no surprise charges for it.

The J&H approach

How we remodel Orem yards

1 How we handle it

One plan for the whole yard

We draw the patio, fire, shade, water features, planting and lighting together, with grading, drainage and irrigation underneath. You approve the plan and the written price before we start any demolition, and you know what each piece costs on its own.

2 How we handle it

Build in the right order

Grading, drainage, gas, power and irrigation mainlines go in first. Then walls, base and hardscape, then planting and lighting. Nothing new gets dug back up to add something that should have gone in earlier, like a gas line for a fire pit you decided on late.

3 How we handle it

Set it up to save water

New irrigation is zoned by water need, beds go on drip, and a smart controller runs it all. The remodeled yard should look a lot better than the old one and use less culinary water doing it.

Orem questions

Backyard Remodel in Orem: what people ask

Will a backyard remodel lower my Orem water bill?
It usually can. Replacing some lawn with patio, fire and planting beds on drip cuts the heaviest culinary water use. New, well-zoned irrigation also wastes less on the lawn that stays, so the savings show up on both sides of the yard.
Can you add a pool area to my remodel?
Yes. We plan the pool area as part of the full yard, including the deck base, drainage, fencing and planting around it. On Orem clay the deck base is what keeps it level next to the coping, so it gets the same care as any patio we build.
When should I start planning?
Over the winter is ideal. Orem's last frost is usually late April, and spring schedules fill fast. Designing ahead means building can start once the ground dries out, and you are using the yard this summer instead of next.
Will I lose my backyard for months?
No. We work in phases so the messy part is as short as possible, and the yard comes back together in layers. You get a schedule with the quote, so you know when the patio is usable again.

Your dream yard. Done right. Done on time.
