Pickleball and Sports Courts in Eagle Mountain

Courts for a young, windy town

Eagle Mountain is a young city. In 2020 the median age here was 22.4, and plenty of new yards get planned around kids, trampolines and a place to play. A backyard pickleball court or a half-court for basketball fits that well, and a lot of lots out here have the room. The catch is the weather. A court is a big flat slab sitting out in the open, and Cedar Valley is not shy about wind or cold.

Wind changes how a court plays. A light pickleball drifts in a breeze a tennis ball would barely notice. Windscreen on the fence helps, and so does setting the court where the house breaks the gusts. Then there are the tumbleweeds. In April 2022, news reports showed them filling yards on Seabiscuit Road near Cedar Valley Airport, and they love to pile up against chain-link court fencing.

We build the slab like it has to last for decades, because it does. That means a compacted base, proper reinforcement, joints placed for our freeze and a slope gentle enough to drain without rolling the ball. On top goes a cushioned acrylic court surface, a putting green if you want one, and fencing and lights sized for your space. We check HOA rules on fences and lights before anything gets ordered.

Eagle Mountain is two climates in one city, the milder Ranches by the Lake Mountains and the colder City Center out toward Fairfield, with open Cedar Valley wind, metered city water and a one-year clock on new front yards.

Know your Eagle Mountain ground

Elevation
About 4,885 feet
Ground
Alkaline, well-drained native ground that builders often leave stripped and packed hard, running saltier toward City Center
Secondary irrigation
there is no citywide secondary system, so yards run on metered city water, and lawns may not be watered from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Growing season
USDA zone 6a to 7a, with cold pockets that act colder, last frost around May 15 on the Ranches side and as late as June 7 near City Center
Wall permits
In Eagle Mountain a retaining wall over 4 feet tall, counting the 30-inch footing depth, needs a building permit and engineered drawings, and no wall may rise more than 6 feet above finished grade

The Eagle Mountain challenges

What courts face in Eagle Mountain

Gusts that push the ball

Pickleballs are light and full of holes, so they drift in wind. On an open lot where the trees have not grown in yet, a steady breeze turns every lob into a guess. We plan windscreen on the fence and use the house or a wall to block what we can.

Tumbleweeds and blowing grit

Open ground at the edge of town sends tumbleweeds and grit across yards every spring. They stack against court fencing and grind on the playing surface. We set the fence bottom tight to the slab and leave a gate wide enough to clear the court fast with a blower.

Slabs and hard winters

Near City Center, cold air settles in at night, and the nearby Fairfield station has recorded lows in the minus 20s. A thin slab on loose fill will crack in that. We dig out soft ground, compact the base in layers and place control joints so any cracking stays where it will not show.

Lights that bother the neighbors

Houses in newer neighborhoods sit close together. Bright court lights aimed wrong shine right into a bedroom next door. We use shielded fixtures pointed down at the court and check HOA rules on pole height and hours of use before we order anything.

The J&H approach

How we build courts here

1 How we handle it

Size it to your yard

A full pickleball court with room to run takes real space, so we measure first. If the yard is tight, we look at a smaller practice court or a half-court that also works for basketball. You see the layout staked out before we dig.

2 How we handle it

Build the slab for the long haul

We remove builder fill, set a compacted road base and pour a reinforced slab with a slight slope for drainage. Once it cures, the acrylic surface goes on in coats, with lines painted for the games your family actually plays.

3 How we handle it

Finish it with turf, fence and light

Many families add a synthetic putting green beside the court or turf where kids run. We put up fencing with windscreen, set LED lights on poles and wire them so you can keep playing after the sun drops behind the West Desert.

Eagle Mountain questions

Pickleball and Sports Courts in Eagle Mountain: what people ask

How much room does a backyard pickleball court need in Eagle Mountain?
A standard pickleball court is 20 by 44 feet, and you want room around it to move, so plan on more than that. Many Eagle Mountain back yards can fit one. We measure your space, check setbacks with your HOA and the city, and show you smaller options if it is tight.
Will wind ruin pickleball in my yard?
You will still have some windy days. Cedar Valley gusts have topped 50 mph in big storms, and no screen stops that. For the everyday breeze, though, windscreen, a spot close to the house and a wall on the windy side make a real difference.
Do I need a permit for court lights or fencing?
It depends on the height and on your HOA. Many Eagle Mountain neighborhoods have their own rules on fence height and lighting. We confirm current rules with the city and your HOA before we price lights or fence, so you are not stuck taking something down.
Can you add a putting green next to the court?
Yes. A synthetic putting green sits nicely beside a court and needs no regular watering, which matters on metered city water. The city has been working on standards for artificial turf, so we confirm what applies to your lot first. Then we build the base so the green rolls true.

Your dream yard. Done right. Done on time.
