Artificial Turf in Highland

Turf on a big Highland lot

It rarely makes sense to turf a whole Highland yard. Turf earns its keep in the hard spots: a putting green by the patio, a dog run, a play area under the swing set, a strip along the court that never stays green, or a slope corner that is a pain to water. Real lawn still has a place where kids run and the soil is good.

Water is the reason more people ask. Highland's pressurized irrigation is metered now, each lot gets a yearly allotment based on its size, and tiered billing is coming. Turf needs no regular watering, so swapping a hard-to-water patch can help. Highland is on the state lawn-replacement rebate list, but that program requires an inspection before any work starts, and we check whether turf qualifies before you tear anything out.

What makes turf last is what is under it. The bench soil can be fast-draining sand in one spot and silt that holds water in another. Turf over silt needs a deeper rock base and a way for water to leave, or pet areas start to smell and the surface goes soft. We build the base for the ground we find and confirm turf rules with the city and your HOA.

Highland is the big-lot town on the bench above Lehi and American Fork, where many lots are an acre or close to it, courts and horse areas share the yard, deer browse the gardens and every retaining wall goes through the city first.

Know your Highland ground

Elevation
About 4,876 feet
Ground
Lake Bonneville delta ground on the Highland bench, with gravelly pockets that drain fast next to silty pockets that hold water, and silty fan soil along the mountain edge
Secondary irrigation
Highland's pressurized irrigation runs April 15 to October 15 on even and odd days with no Sunday watering, the meters are in, and tiered billing is coming
Growing season
USDA zone 6a to 7a depending on the lot, last frost late April or later, since Highland sits higher than the valley floor
Wall permits
In Highland every retaining wall needs city approval, and a wall 4 feet or taller, or one carrying a surcharge, needs a building permit with a stamped engineered plan and a drainage plan

The Highland challenges

Turf problems on Highland lots

Silty ground under the base

On the silty parts of the bench, water from rain, melting snow or a rinse hose has nowhere to go. It sits under the turf, and the base softens and dips. We dig deeper there, compact a rock base and give the water a path out.

Pet areas that smell

Urine has to pass through the turf, through the base and out. If the base does not drain, it builds up, and on a hot July afternoon you will know it. We use a free-draining base and infill made for pet areas.

Heat on a sunny surface

Turf gets hot in full summer sun. On an open Highland lot with little shade, that matters for kids and dogs. We place turf near some shade when we can, talk through infill choices with you and keep a hose bib close by for a quick cool-down.

Turf on a slope

Turf on a slope can creep and wrinkle if the base and edges are not locked down. Steeper spots near Highland's mountain edge need a firmer base and stronger edge restraint. We also make sure water running off the slope does not wash out the base below.

The J&H approach

How we install turf in Highland

1 How we handle it

Dig, test and plan drainage

We remove the old lawn and dig to a depth set by the soil we find. Silty spots get more base and a drain path. Sprinkler heads in the turf area get capped or moved to water the beds around it.

2 How we handle it

Compacted base, then turf

We lay and compact crushed rock in lifts, shape any breaks for a putting green and check the grade so water runs off. Then the turf goes down, seams are joined and the edges are secured.

3 How we handle it

Finish for how you use it

Pet areas get infill and a base made to drain. Play areas can get padding under the turf. Putting greens get a tighter turf and a smooth roll. We walk it with you before we leave.

Highland questions

Artificial Turf in Highland: what people ask

Is artificial turf allowed in Highland?
Rules can come from the city and from your HOA, and either one can change. We confirm both for your lot before we price the job. Finding a problem after the turf is down is the expensive way to learn a rule, so we ask first.
Does turf qualify for the lawn-replacement rebate?
Highland is on the Utah Water Savers eligibility list for lawn replacement, but whether turf counts depends on the program's current rules. The program also requires an inspection before any work starts. We check before you tear out a single square foot of lawn.
Is turf good for dogs in Highland?
It can be, if the base drains. On silty bench soil we go deeper with the rock base so urine passes through instead of sitting. A rinse with the hose on hot days keeps it fresh. Many people turf just the dog run and keep real lawn elsewhere.

Your dream yard. Done right. Done on time.
