A buyer's guide to custom landscape designers in Alpine: what a good plan covers on a big lot near the mountains, and what to watch for in a pretty drawing.
“They listened to what I wanted done even mid-job.”
“I will definitely use you again for any future landscaping needs.”
Custom Landscape Designers
A custom design for an Alpine yard has more to juggle than most. The lots are big, so there is a lot to plan. Many slope, so walls and terraces come into it. The water is metered and billed in tiers. New yards come with lawn rules. Deer browse the bench, and lots near the mountain edge sit next to wildland. A designer has to hold all of that at once.
Strong Alpine plans start with the view and the slope, not a catalog. Where do you want to sit at sunset? Where does the hill want to be flat? From there the plan sets lawn and stone close to the house, planting and natives farther out, and walls only where they earn their place. A drawing that skips grading or water is not finished.
Here is what to look for in a designer, the mistakes that show up after the drawing gets built, and the questions to ask. At the end we show how J&H does design and build together, so the plan and the crew are on the same page from the first sketch.
What to look for
The design should show where snowmelt and storm water go, not just where plants go. On a sloped Alpine lot, grading is the base of everything else. Ask to see the water path drawn right on the plan.
For new landscaping, Alpine caps lawn area and keeps lawn off steep slopes and narrow strips. A good designer knows this and draws lawn where it is allowed and where you will use it, then double-checks the current code with the city.
Ask what the plan does about deer on the bench and fuel near the house. Good answers name natives like serviceberry and chokecherry, and show lean planting and stone in the first 30 feet around the house.
A design without a price and a build order is a wish list. Ask for phases, the order they go in, and a cost for each. That way you can build the yard over time without redoing anything.
What goes wrong in Alpine
A flat-looking plan for a sloped lot hides the walls it will take to build it. Once someone prices those walls and the engineering, the budget jumps. Ask the designer to show the grades on the plan before you fall for it.
Filling a big Alpine lot with lawn looks green on paper. On a metered, tiered bill, and under the lawn limits for new yards, it is the most expensive choice you can make. Lawn belongs where people play on it.
Fast-growing trees planted along the back line can wipe out the view of Lone Peak in ten years. Good designs frame the view with lower plants and put shade trees where they cool the patio instead.
