What to expect from a whole-yard landscape designer in Lehi, from the first site walk to a plan a crew can build in phases on clay or a hillside lot.
“I have been doing design work for over 30 years and have worked with a myriad of contractors. He is one of the good ones.”
“We would absolutely hire this team again and recommend them to anyone looking for landscaping help.”
Custom Landscape Designers
A nice drawing is the easy part. Anyone with software can put a fire pit, a lawn and a curvy path on a page. The hard part is a plan that knows Lehi ground. Where does the water go on your clay lot? Can that slope hold a patio, or does it need a wall and a permit first? A good design answers that before it picks a paver color.
Designers in Utah County tend to work one of two ways. Some only draw, then hand you a plan to take to a builder. Others design and build, so the people who drew it are the ones who dig. Both can work. With a draw-only plan, though, you need a builder who will follow it, and Lehi clay and slopes leave little room for making it up in the field.
Below is what a whole-yard plan should include here, the mistakes we see when it gets skipped and how J&H runs design and build as one job. If you are on a new lot with an HOA date, or a steep lot on Traverse Mountain, the plan matters even more.
What to look for
The plan should show how rain and snowmelt leave the yard, not just where the plants go. On Lehi clay, that may mean swales, drain lines or a dry well. If a designer cannot show you the water path, the pretty parts will end up sitting in mud.
Gas for a fire pit, power for lights, pipes under the patio for sprinklers that come later. A good plan marks all of these before any concrete goes in. Adding a sleeve under a finished patio means cutting it open, and nobody wants that bill.
Most Lehi families do not build the whole yard in one season. Ask the designer to split the plan into phases, with grading and pipes first. Each phase should stand on its own and look finished, even if the next one is two years out.
Ask for a real plant list, not just green blobs on a page. It should name plants that handle alkaline soil, Lehi winters and full afternoon sun on open lots. A good designer also tells you which plants want more water so they can share a zone.
What goes wrong in Lehi
We see drawings that look great but have no elevation numbers at all. On a Traverse Mountain lot, that leaves the crew to guess how much cut, fill and wall the yard needs. The guess usually shows up as a change order once the digging starts.
Many Lehi neighborhoods review yard plans, fence styles or materials. A design that never went past the HOA can stall your project or force changes after the money is spent. Ask whether the designer has built time for that review into the schedule.
Some plans show plants and stone but no sprinklers. Then the installer zones it on the fly, and the lawn by the patio shares a zone with the shrubs by the fence. On Lehi's metered secondary water, that mix wastes water every week of the season.
